The Digital Revolution | Chris and Susan Beesley|Online Business ...

Way back in 2005, we realised that there were going to be huge changes in the way that people would earn their income in the future.? Video we knew was going to play an ever increasing role in the lives of us all providing us with solutions to problems as well as entertainment.? In 2006 when Google acquired YouTube the digital revolution was well underway.

At that time we were still working as management consultants and accountants in our own business and our clients were starting to look to the internet which was opening up huge opportunities for those prepared to be ?first to market?, to be using internet marketing ? blogging, Google PPC, and the early Social Media (Twitter and Facebook).? We are first and foremost entrepreneurs so we set about learning all that we could to help our clients which was to be fundamental in our future as online marketers in 2010. Little did we know the effect that the digital revolution would have on us ?.

One of the key influencers for us was Daniel Priestly (Author of Key Person of Influence) who was the first person to help us understand Social Media and the impact that this would have on our lives and give a voice to every entrepeneur ? he already saw the effect of the digital revolution.? Daniel has always been someone who saw the future way ahead of time ? a ?thought leader? and we were fortunate to have him appear on our TV show and explain how he saw the impact that the Digital Revolution would have on the lives of entrepreneurs forever ?.

We became the founder leaders of The Six Figure Mentors back in 2010 and always shared with the Founder Stuart Ross the vision for internet entrepreneurs and the launch of The Digital Experts Academy is that dream come true.

Here the Digital Experts Academy share their thoughts of the Digital Revolution and how each of us can now capitalise on what has become a digital economy

The Industrial Revolution of the 19th-century led to enormous increases in population, expansion of cities, and a boom in technology and the economy. It began in Britain during the late 18th-century and quickly spread across Europe and on to the rest of the world. Everything that was once done by hand slowly became mechanized, and the world began to change.

What was the result of all this industrialization? Tremendous wealth was created by some; however, tremendous hardship was felt by others as mechanization eliminated their jobs. More?efficient ways of producing goods?were being developed; unfortunately, not everyone benefited equally. Farmers were now forced to produce more and more just to survive and make ends meet. The real winners were the entrepreneurs who took advantage of the emerging technologies to create products, solutions, and services that didn?t exist before.

Then came the Great Depression in the 1930s. We have all seen the pictures of people standing in line for food and work. Despite the circumstances, there were some, who not only avoided that fate, but also found ways to become more?successful. In fact, there were more millionaires created during the Great Depression than any other time in history. How was that possible?

One such entrepreneur was Andrew Carnegie, a magnate of the steel industry in the early 20th century. He commissioned magnate author Napoleon Hill to write a book about the principles of success by reverse-engineering the success secrets of the wealthiest, most successful entrepreneurs in the world. Napoleon interviewed 400 of these millionaire entrepreneurs and condensed their common themes of success into his famous book ?Think and Grow Rich?.

As the economy transitioned, a huge transfer of wealth began. Those who were correctly positioned benefited enormously. Those who weren?t, found themselves in line for food stamps and handout.

Productivity increased, the more technology advanced, creating less?reliance?on?expensive human labor. Then came the Jet Age, Atomic Age, and the Space Age. All of these were part of the Second Industrial Revolution, and each of these created tremendous wealth for a?privileged?few. For millions of others, it meant new competition and obsoletion.

When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters. One represents danger, and the other represents opportunity. We are now in the beginning of an even bigger revolution. For some, this means crisis, for others, opportunity.

If history repeats itself, there will be yet another massive transfer of wealth.?There will be those on the cutting edge of change who will benefit, and everyone else.

In the 80?s, a shift began from traditional industry, (that the industrial revolution brought through industrialization), to an economy based on the manipulation and exchange of data and information. Whereas the Industrial Revolution created tremendous wealth by allowing the mass production of goods, the Digital Revolution has created what we believe is even a greater opportunity to create wealth.

During the Digital Revolution, we gained the ability to transfer information freely; we now had instant access to information that would have been difficult or impossible to find previously. As we all know,?this has changed how the world functions and communicates dramatically.

Here are a few examples of how far we have come in 20-30 years:

  • Vinyl records gave way to CDs, then MP3s, and now streaming audio
  • The VHS tape gave way to the DVD and Blu-ray, and now, streaming video
  • Pay-phones?gave way to cell phones
  • Dial up Internet gave way to high speed digital cable
  • The typewriter gave way to the printer
  • Mail evolved to the facsimile, then email
  • Film photography transitioned to digital photography

In 1995, Nicholas Negroponte wrote Being Digital, a book that analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the advancement of technology. He also predicted how the technologies will evolve.

Be it newspapers, entertainment or sex, Negropronte predicted that we are headed towards a future where everything that can be will be digitized.

Negroponte predicted that his own book made of ?unwieldy atoms? will probably be replaced by a digital copy in the future. (Several e-books exist of Being Digital making the quote rather prophetic.)

Atoms make up physical, tangible products. Digital information, on the other hand, is made up of bits, the smallest unit of information on a computer. (Ones and zeros, to be precise.)

All products and forms of information that are now made of atoms (books, CDs, etc.) will eventually be digitized and made into bits of information that can be shared and exchanged instantaneously.

A major landmark in the revolution was the transition from analog to digitally recorded music. In the 1980s, the digital format of optical CDs replaced analog formats such as vinyl records and cassette tapes, as the popular medium of choice.

Motorola created the first mobile phone in 1983. Towards the end of the 1980s, having some knowledge of computers became necessary for many jobs.

In 1992, the World Wide Web was released to the public. It didn?t take long, and by 1996, the Internet was in the mainstream consciousness and many businesses listed websites in their ads.

By 1999, almost every country had a connection, and more than half of Americans used the Internet on a regular basis.

After revolutionizing society in the developed world in the 1990s, in the 2000s, the digital revolution spread to the developing world.

Check out these Digital Revolution stats (Source: Wikipedia)

1990

  • Cell phone subscribers: 12.4 million (0.25% of the world population in 1990)
  • Internet users: 2.8 million (0.05% of the world population in 1990)

2000

  • Cell phone subscribers: 1.1 Billion (19% of the world population in 2002)
  • Internet users: 631 million (11% of the world population in 2002)

2010

  • Cell phone subscribers: 4 Billion (67% of the world population in 2010)
  • Internet users: 1.8 Billion (26.6% of the world population in 2010)

As you can see, by 2010, almost 2 billion people used the Internet. That?s almost three times the number in 2000. By 2010, 4 billion people were using cell phones,?compared to just over a billion in 2000.

By 2015, tablet computers and smartphones are expected to exceed personal computers in Internet usage.

The bottom line is this: Industry is becoming more information-intensive and less labor and capital-intensive. This means that more and more traditional barriers to success in business are being removed.

In the traditional economy, investments in human capital?and financial capital are critical to the success of a new venture. However, as demonstrated by Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook and a million other tech startups, it is now possible for a group of relatively inexperienced people with limited capital to succeed on a large scale in the digital economy.

The good news in all of this is that there is now a whole new world of possibility in the increasingly virtual world. Things that were unimaginable in the traditional economy are all of a sudden possible. Many of our success stories are from people that would never have?stood a chance of success in the traditional economy.

Instead having to risk life and limb to prospect for gold, virtually anyone with a computer and access to the Internet, can access the Digital Gold Rush.

If you?ve ever said to yourself, ?I wish I?d bought Google stock early on??, or, ?I wish I had bought into Apple as a startup??, you know that all too familiar feeling of being left behind when you?ve passed up a significant opportunity.

Nobody knows for certain where the Digital Revolution will take us. Some believe it may lead to digital cities, economies, and societies sometime in the future. Others, like Ray Kurzweil, believe the day will come when artificial intelligence will super-cede human intelligence and computers will control the world!

Regardless of where we are headed, one thing?s for sure ? there is a ton of opportunity to be capitalized on by those who are smart. You want to be on the cutting edge of these changes not only to capitalize on the opportunity created by the change in times but to avoid being crushed, outsourced, eliminated, and made redundant.

They ask the question ?History has taught us some hugely important lessons over and over again. On which side of history will you be??

DNA in stolen kisses could reveal sex offenders

SO ROMANTIC... when you kiss your partner passionately, not only do you exchange bacteria and mucus, you also impart some of your genetic code. No matter how fleeting the encounter, the DNA will hang around in their mouth for at least an hour. This means that women's saliva could contain evidence of unwanted attention in cases of assault, or even telltale signs of infidelity.

Nat?lia Kamodyov? and her colleagues at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, recruited 12 couples who agreed to kiss each other passionately for at least 2 minutes. Afterwards, saliva samples were collected from the women at 5, 10, 30 and 60-minute intervals. Because Kamodyov?'s method relies on detection of the Y chromosome, it can only be used to identify a man's DNA in a woman's saliva.

The results show that the man's DNA was still present and could be detected through amplification after at least an hour, and possibly longer. "We've shown it's possible to get a full profile, which could be useful in crime investigation to pinpoint the possible perpetrator among suspects or exclude those innocent," says Kamodyov?. Her team is investigating whether the DNA survives longer than an hour and whether it's obtainable from the mouths of women who have died (Forensic Science International: Genetics, DOI: 10.1016/j.fsigen.2012.07.007).

Japanese stocks lead markets lower on yen concern

LONDON (AP) ? Japanese shares led markets lower Wednesday after a minister warned over an excessive fall in the value of the yen. Elsewhere, markets were subdued amid ongoing U.S. budget concerns and despite forecast-busting earnings from Goldman Sachs.

The Japanese currency has been sold off sharply in recent weeks, and that's helped the country's main stock market clamber up to 32-month highs ? a lower currency makes Japanese goods potentially more competitive in the international marketplace, thereby helping the national economy to grow.

However, while making exports cheaper, a lower currency can stoke inflation by making imports more expensive, and that's important for a country that's dependent on foreign sources for things like oil.

Kyodo News Agency reported that economy minister Akira Amari voiced exactly those concerns and that prompted a reverse in the Nikkei 225 index, which closed 2.6 percent lower at 10,600.44 alongside the recovery in the yen.

However, by late afternoon London time, the dollar had recovered somewhat to trade only 0.2 percent lower at 88.64 yen. Earlier, it had traded as low as 87.76 yen, a couple of yen below where it was trading at one point Tuesday.

Many analysts had anticipated that the impact on the yen of the comments from Amari would be anything more than short-lived. The yen has been falling over the past couple of months in anticipation of economy-boosting measures that will dilute the value of the yen.

"While the intervention has resulted in a minor correction, it has not been dramatic and we think it does not alter the trend towards further yen depreciation," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.

Elsewhere, markets were subdued for the second-day running. Over the first couple of weeks of 2013, many stock indexes hit multiyear highs on relief that U.S. politicians cobbled together a last-minute budget deal to avoid the so-called 'fiscal cliff' of automatic tax rises and spending cuts that would have come into effect on Jan. 1.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.2 percent to close at 6,103.98 while Germany's DAX rose an equivalent rate to 7,691.13. The CAC-40 in France ended 0.3 percent higher at 3,708.49.

In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was 0.2 percent lower at 13,510.43 while the broader S&P 500 index was flat at 1,471.96.

Traders are increasingly nervous about a fight brewing in Washington over raising the U.S. debt ceiling so that the government can keep borrowing money to pay its bills. The U.S. Treasury says it will run out of money to pay all the government's obligations sometime in February or March if Congress doesn't raise the current $16.4 trillion limit on borrowing.

Republican lawmakers say they will demand major spending cuts in exchange for any agreement to raise the debt limit. But President Barack Obama has said he won't negotiate on the debt limit.

"The post-fiscal cliff rally has been looking weaker and weaker of late, as the bulls struggle to lift markets beyond recent highs," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG.

Upbeat earnings from Goldman Sachs shored up sentiment at the U.S. open, though that was outweighed by concerns over Boeing. Japan's two biggest airlines grounded all their 787 planes for safety checks after one was forced to make an emergency landing. Goldman Sachs' share price was up around 2 percent but Boeing's was around 4 percent lower.

The day's lukewarm trading started in Asia. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.1 percent to 23,356.99. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.3 percent to 1,977.45.

Oil prices were higher, with the benchmark New York contract up 90 cents at $94.18 a barrel, while the euro was down 0.1 percent at $1.3298.

Sony To Concentrate On Premium Smartphones

It would appear that Sony Mobile is considering producing less of their budget smartphones and more of their premium handsets, according to a recent interview with a Sony executive.

Sony?s marketing manager, Stephen Sneeden, recently spoke to Cnet at CES, and it would appear that Sony are looking to concentrate their efforts towards higher end devices instead of the budget market.

Sony Xperia Z

We?re ready to be a premium smartphone provider, logically then, at the very entry level is where you lose the ?Sonyness?. And it?s where you cannot implement some of these wonderful things from Sony at such a low cost, we might leave the very entry tier to some other manufacturers,? Sneeden said.

It will be interesting to see if the approach works for Sony, by focusing on higher end devices, it seems to have worked well for other manufacturers in the past.

Cisco Sued by University over 'Tomorrow Starts Here' Slogan

Added on Jan 15, 2013 by John Ribeiro, IDG News Service (Bangalore Bureau)

Cisco Systems has been sued in a federal court by East Carolina University (ECU) for the "Tomorrow Starts Here" tagline it adopted in December.

ECU in Greenville, North Carolina, has used the mark 'Tomorrow Starts Here' for over a decade, including in national advertisements and publications, it said in a statement Friday. "We feel it is essential to take action to protect that defining trademark of our identity and vision," university chancellor Steve Ballard said in the statement.

The university's complaint alleges that Cisco's use of the identical mark infringes both its federally registered and common law trademark rights.

Apparently to emphasize that Cisco's and the university's use of the trademark could confuse the consumer, ECU said that trademark "Tomorrow Starts Here" is a university-wide brand that "represents an overlapping field of goods and services when compared with that of Cisco."

Research initiatives through ECU's College of Technology and Computer Science, for example, have created products and intellectual property that are actively being commercialized, the university said. ECU also said it promotes its global online education program using the mark "Tomorrow Starts Here."

Cisco could not be immediately reached for comment. The company said in December it launched a campaign with the "Tomorrow Starts Here" slogan to showcase how Cisco makes "amazing things happen" when it connects the unconnected, using new IP-enabled devices, more broadband access, and IPv6, the next version of the Internet protocol. 99 percent of things in the physical world are still unconnected, it said.

13 Indian PR trends for 2013 | Our Thought

It?s that time of the year again,?it?s time to?take up the crystal ball and look at what trends will matter for the business of public relations in India in 2013.

Here goes:

1. Social media

Social media is emerging as a major influence that shapes PR strategy and is pushing changes in all directions, encouraging brands to embrace online PR. This was the one topic on the mind of every PR professional we spoke to. Says, Poonam Thakur, Manager of PR?and Corporate Communication, MakeMyTrip.com, ?Social media has provided a viable platform for citizens to engage. However sustainability is something that is expected to be a challenge for campaigners. Creating a self-sustaining engagement programme is the Holy Grail and the confluence of savvy digital marketing and engaging content may just help us achieve it!?

2. Rise of the digital journalist

PR strategists will need to further factor in a whole new era of journalism: digital journalists make up an important additional platform to deal with. ?Next year is also likely to see social media becoming a larger part of the PR efforts undertaken by most organizations thereby changing the pace and style of corporate communications. The mind boggling pace at which social media is growing is making organizations evaluate their communications strategy and public relations today encompasses establishing and building strong relationships with bloggers, twitterati and social media experts.? says? Eashwari Deshpande, Public Relations Manager at?Intel South Asia.

3. Civil society

Five?years ago, news generated by civil society movements was virtually nonexistent. The Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal public engagements have been a game changer for civil society and its impact on PR nationally. Dhritiman Biswas, a seasoned corporate affairs and crisis management professional, says, ?2013 will see more of mass movements and ?ground swell? campaigns, put together with help of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. As the mobile penetration increases (especially smart phones) in Tier 2 and 3 cities, barriers of accessibility and language will break down leading to a more inclusive movement, which till now was limited to urban areas. Communication professionals will need to accept this paradigm shift as the ?new normal? and create strategies taking this new parameter to exploit issues or limit the damage.?

4. It?s the content!

Experts recommend focusing more on content than relationships in 2013. Karthik Srinivasan, AVP?Corporate Communications, Flipkart.com asserts that, ?The latter was PR 1.0 and the former is PR 2.0. We are living in an era of content explosion and PR is well suited to make appropriate use of it to benefit clients.?

5. Brand journalism

Brand journalism is one trend that 2013 could see more of. While this may be more prevalent internationally rather than in India, that does not face that big of challenge of shrinking newsrooms yet, Carson Dalton, Head of?Corporate Communications, BT Asia Pacific, flags this off as a trend for 2013 dictated by shrinking budgets and shrinking newsrooms, ?Companies like Coca Cola already make use of brand journalism, where journalists are free to pick up content from websites. This is a situation where you start owning the content and this trend is being aided by the rise of social media platforms.?

6. Big data

Big data will continue to be a source of crucial business information. Says Carson Dalton, ?Social Big Data is here to stay. Applications and local innovation will simplify the process in a multi lingual market.?

7. Sustainability

Dhritiman Biswas points out that ?with the Companies Bill poised to pass in the Indian Parliament, CSR and Sustainability will see greater focus (and hence jobs creation in this area) in 2013.?

8. Visual PR

PR is set to become even more visual in 2013, with people consuming information in quick visual bytes. ?Infographics in press releases would be the next big thing in visual PR in India,? according to Biswas.

9. The tech sector?

The tech sector will continue to generate news trends in 2013 and therefore opportunities for PR. Eashwari Deshpande, Public Relations Manager, Intel South Asia, points out that ?for the technology industry, in particular, there?s likely to be high interest around the connected multi-device scenario in India, cloud computing, small and medium business technology adoption as well as growth and the interest around the government?s IT policy and implementation.?

10. Mobile PR

?Brands have to create a mobile strategy as most emerging markets and the world over are accessing the internet via their smart devices?, says Dalton.

11. Crisis communication and the rising importance of PR

Eashwari Deshpande says that, ? In tough times, public relations becomes the most effective way of getting credible visibility for the organisations and 2013 is likely to see more activity in the PR functions at most organizations.?

12. Intensive?24?7 news cycle

?In an era where news breaks on Twitter and reputations are built or broken on Facebook, the need to manage perceptions is more acute than ever before. PR folks need to be nimble, well-connected and make their peace with being on-the-job 24?7?, points out Poonam Thakur.

13. Being strategic and not merely tactical will lead to?a better?image for the PR business

?Have an opinion and air it to the client as counsel confidently. PR is not a press release dissemination function ? it is a function that leads to change in perceptions. In a way, PR industry by itself needs to do better PR for the profession,? advises, Flipkart?s Srinivasan.

And here?s an extra trend for luck that is bound to warm the hearts of agencies ?

Not bashing PR agencies
As Carson Dalton puts it succinctly, ?Bashing PR agencies is so 1990s?.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? From Africa's crowded AIDS clinics to the malarial jungles of Southeast Asia, the lives of millions of ill people in the developing world are hanging in the balance ahead of a legal ruling that will determine whether India's drug companies can continue to provide cheap versions of many life-saving medicines.

The case ? involving Swiss drug maker Novartis AG's cancer drug Glivec ? pits aid groups that argue India plays a vital role as the pharmacy to the poor against drug companies that insist they need strong patents to make drug development profitable. A ruling by India's Supreme Court is expected in early 2013.

"The implications of this case reach far beyond India, and far beyond this particular cancer drug," said Leena Menghaney, from the aid group Doctors Without Borders. "Across the world, there is a heavy dependence on India to supply affordable versions of expensive patented medicines."

With no costs for developing new drugs or conducting expensive trials, India's $26 billion generics industry is able to sell medicine for as little as one-tenth the price of the companies that developed them, making India the second-largest source of medicines distributed by UNICEF in its global programs.

Indian pharmaceutical companies such as Cipla, Cadila Laboratories and Lupin have emerged over the past decade as major sources of generic cancer, malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS drugs for poor countries that can't afford to pay Western prices.

The 6-year-old case that just wrapped up in the Supreme Court revolves around a legal provision in India's 2005 patent law that is aimed at preventing companies from getting fresh patents for making only minor changes to existing medicines ? a practice known as "evergreening."

Novartis' argued that a new version of Glivec ? marketed in the U.S. as Gleevec ? was a significant change from the earlier version because it was more easily absorbed by the body.

India's Patent Controller turned down the application, saying the change was an obvious development, and the new medicine was not sufficiently distinct from the earlier version to warrant a patent extension.

Patient advocacy groups hailed the decision as a blow to "evergreening."

But Western companies argued that India's generic manufacturers were cutting the incentive for major drug makers to invest in research and innovation if they were not going to be able to reap the exclusive profits that patents bring.

"This case is about safeguarding incentives for better medicines so that patients' needs will be met in the future," says Eric Althoff, a Novartis spokesman.

International drug companies have accused India of disregarding intellectual property rights, and have pushed for stronger patent protection that would weaken India's generics industry.

Earlier this year, an Indian manufacturer was allowed to produce a far cheaper version of the kidney and liver cancer treatment sorefinib, manufactured by Bayer Corp.

Bayer was selling the drug for about $5,600 a month. Natco, the Indian company, said its generic version would cost $175 a month, less than 1/30th as much. Natco was ordered to pay 6 percent in royalties to Bayer.

Novartis says the outcome of the new case will not affect the availability of generic versions of Glivec because it is covered by a grandfather clause in India's patent law. Only the more easily absorbed drug would be affected, Althoff said, adding that its own generic business, Sandoz, produces cheap versions of its drugs for millions across the globe.

Public health activists say the question goes beyond Glivec to whether drug companies should get special protection for minor tweaks to medicines that others could easily have uncovered.

"We're looking to the Supreme Court to tell Novartis it won't open the floodgates and allow abusive patenting practices," said Eldred Tellis, of the Sankalp Rehabilitation Centre, a private group working with HIV patients.

The court's decision is expected to be a landmark that will influence future drug accessibility and price across the developing world.

"We're already paying very high prices for some of the new drugs that are patented in India," said Petros Isaakidis, an epidemiologist with Doctors Without Borders. "If Novartis' wins, even older medicines could be subject to patenting again, and it will become much more difficult for us in future to provide medicines to our patients being treated for HIV, hepatitis and drug resistant TB."
