Cave dwelling nettle discovered in China

Dec. 28, 2012 ? South West China, Myanmar and Northern Vietnam contain one of the oldest exposed outcrops of limestone in the world. Within this area are thousands of caves and gorges. It is only recently that botanists have sought to explore the caves for plants. This exploration is yielding many new species new to science, that are known only from these habitats.

The current study was published in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

Kew botanist and nettle expert Alex Monro says, "When my Chinese colleague Wei Yi-Gang from the Guangxi Institute of Botany first mentioned cave-dwelling plants to me, I thought that he was mis-translating a Chinese word into English. When we stepped into our first cave, Yangzi cave, I was spell-bound. It had an eerie moonscape look to it and all I could see were clumps of plants in the nettle family growing in very dark condition."

The plants do not grow in complete darkness but do grow in extremely low light levels, deep within the entrance caverns of the caves (sometimes, in as little as 0.04% full sunlight). The British and Chinese authors have been collecting plants from the Nettle family in this limestone landscape for several years and have just published a paper describing three new species, one from a cave and another two from deep gorges.

The cave-dwelling nettle species in question, was found growing in two caves in the Guangxi province of China. Of the species discovered in gorges, one is known from an unusual and striking rock mineral formation called petaloid travertine. Petaloid travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs that over time forms large petals of rock, in this case clinging to the vertical walls of a gorge.

These plants are members of a genus of Nettles known as Pilea, that is believed to have over 700 species Worldwide, up to one third of which may remain undescribed.

Better Way Health Says: 'It's Not Just About Food!' | StAug News

Better Way Health Says: ?It?s Not Just About Food!?

How to Have an Even Happier, Healthier 2013!

?

We talk about food. We talk about less sugar, cutting the fat, improving cardio, taking that beta glucan and eating beta glucan-filled foods so that you live longer, healthier lives. But, what most people do not know, is that life and health is not all about food and exercise. And our friends at BetterWayHealth.com want to talk to you this holiday season about the benefits of ?drink,? so that when you reach for that glass on New Year?s Eve you will have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.

?

What most people do not know in this age of constant exercise and constantly ?bashing? people about their weight ? and what and when 3D-BetterWay2they eat ? is that liquor is also something that allows people to live longer. When it comes to two categories ? abstainers and heavy drinkers ? we are talking about people who are leading their bodies toward heart attacks and strokes. BUT, a moderate drinker of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer and distilled spirits) is far less likely to suffer heart attacks, diabetes, arthritis, enlarged prostate, dementia, and several major cancers. This is not a new concept, by the way. This is something that even doctors will tell you, considering that alcoholic beverages help with tension, stress and even the easing of nerve endings and muscle pain. As long as you don?t overdo it ? this is a true health ?pleaser.?

?

Believe it or not, the medicinal properties of alcohol are mentioned everywhere throughout history; many books from various communities (including the ?Good Book?) talk about alcohol and how it cures. As early as the turn of the century there was evidence that moderate, controlled consumption decreased the risk of heart attack, not to mention huge evidence of other health benefits when it came to adding ?a drink? to daily life.

?

Reviews, studies, reports ? a great many things show a strong relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and the reduction in cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease. Even the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has reported that moderate drinkers have the greatest longevity. But they?re not the only ones who report this. Health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have existed since one of the earliest? scientific studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which appeared in 1904. And the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Committee on Cardiovascular Disease also weighed in by saying that ?the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and reduced death from heart disease can no longer be doubted.?

?

So?when the New Year comes along and the wine is flowing and the friends are smiling, what exactly is the best drink to add to the diet that will improve cardiovascular function and, perhaps, save you from heart disease?

?

There are no ?set? rules when it comes to the various alcohol categories, but the total calorie count has to be taken into consideration. Say you add one drink per day to your diet ? perhaps in the evening after the hard, fast job has come to an end and it is time to relax and do something for yourself! Generally speaking, a serving of wine has fewer calories than a serving of beer, which in turn has fewer calories than a serving of mixed drinks. Beer, as everyone knows, contains a great deal of carbs ? while most wines and liquors are low-carb categories. If you want to make the choice as simple as possible, go with a nice glass of wine or liquor. When we speak about liquor, however, we are NOT speaking about mixed drinks. In fact, doctor?s point out that when it comes to mixed drinks: ?It is the mixers, syrups, and sodas that get people into calorie trouble, because most drinks start with 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits that only have around 96 calories, but mixologists turn that into a beverage with hundreds of calories when special things are added.?

?

If calories are a concern, pick a drink that is served ?neat? and skip the extras completely. (A 1.5-ounce serving of vodka, gin, whiskey, etc., is roughly one hundred calories, which is online with a five-ounce serving of wine. Beer, of course, can cost you a little. Light beer can range from 90-100 calories per 12-ounce serving, whereas a regular beer is around 300 calories, which is a great deal to take in (even though this is still the number one choice for consumers.)

?

In essence, a glass of wine can provide you with all the health benefits you?re looking for, and when drinking liquor, just make sure it?s all by itself to give you better health. But if mixed drinks are your ?choice,? just make sure that you use mixers that are diet tonics, sodas and/or juices to keep them healthy. There?s always compromise when it comes to healthy/dietary foods, so drink is no different.

?

If you find yourself at that holiday party, just remember to have your drink then, perhaps, switch to a different, non-alcoholic drink, such as sparkling water with a squeeze of lime. This way, you can feel refreshed and not have to worry about any ?battle of the bulge? from over-consumption. If self-control is an issue (as it is most times with delicious foods), simply go for the lower-calorie and often more bland? drinks. That way, cutting yourself off will be absolutely no problem whatsoever.

?

In the end, enjoy and celebrate the New Year ? AND also work at least one glass of wine (if possible) into the diet so that you can save your heart the stress and tension it receives from the everyday hectic life. But, above all, turn to BetterWayHealth.com in the New Year and get the advice, friendship and help YOU need to live a healthier life!

?

Happy Holidays!

(AP) ? Looks like Shamu may soon be making a splash in the stock market.

The company behind the water shows featuring killer whales, dolphins and other animals at SeaWorld on Thursday said it was planning to go public.

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. filed for an initial public offering of stock with an initial goal of raising $100 million. That number is likely to change as the company's bankers gauge interest from investors.

SeaWorld's owner, Blackstone Group LP, will likely sell some of its stake in the deal. But the private equity firm will still own a majority of the voting power of the company's shares after the IPO, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

SeaWorld plans to use money from the IPO to pay debt and make a payment to Blackstone.

Blackstone bought SeaWorld from beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2009 in a deal worth at least $2.3 billion.

The Orlando, Fla., company did not list a date for the offering. The company also did not say how many shares would be sold, or for how much. SeaWorld plans to use the "SEAS" symbol for its stock, but did not say on which exchange it plans to trade.

Besides the three SeaWorld parks, the company's eight other properties include two Busch Gardens parks and Sesame Place, which is based on the children's TV show Sesame Street.SeaWorld said about 24 million people went to its parks in the 12 months through Sept. 30.

In the first nine months of this year, it earned $86.2 million, up 73 percent from $50 million in the same months a year ago. Revenue rose 7.6 percent to $1.16 billion.

Self Improvement And Empowerment Blog: How to Stop Feelings of ...

I seek strength, not to be greater than another, but to fight my greatest enemy, the doubts within myself. ~P.D. Cast

Of all the elements that form the comfort zone, unworthiness is without question the most insidious.

Unworthiness is that shadowy deep-seated belief that creeps into our minds and tells us we are undeserving and not good enough, inadequate and fundamentally flawed. Unworthiness serves as a shield to insulate us from risk, chance and the unknown.

Some of us may already be aware of certain limiting and negative beliefs we have about ourselves. These we can learn to heal and change. The real problem goes deeper? it?s the unconscious self-doubt and unworthy feelings we accept about ourselves.

The unworthiness mantra is ?Don?t try it, don?t even think about it.?

Without realizing it, we allow unworthiness to sabotage us in a hundred different ways, using endless justifications to keep from reaching for our dreams. For the sake of shielding ourselves from even the remote possibility of having to face our own fundamental inadequacy? we will do whatever it takes to just not think about it.

We repeatedly second guess our choices; falling into endless mental reruns picking apart what we could or should have done differently; over time finding it harder and harder to make definitive decisions that will enable us to move forward.
We avoid testing (or exposing) ourselves by allowing days, weeks and years to go by as we focus on the daily minutia of life and tell ourselves we?ll get to the big important stuff as soon as we?re ?caught up? or when the ?time is right.?
We use our responsibilities, especially to others, as shields to prevent ourselves from trying something new.

While there?s a lot to be said for gratitude, there is a BIG difference between appreciating all the good things and people in your life and choosing to settle for less because you don?t believe you deserve or are capable of more.

A few months ago I received a heartbreaking note from a reader who wanted to share with me why she had just unsubscribed from IGG. She went on to explain that while she enjoyed the articles and found them inspiring they also depressed her because she found herself focusing on all that she could never have or be in her life. ?A lot of people have it worse than me, so I just need to stop dreaming and be grateful for what I have now.?

How to Resolve Feelings of Unworthiness

Be willing to challenge beliefs about yourself: Begin by exploring the ?why? behind negative self talk. Make a positive statement about yourself such as I am a loving person or I deserve to achieve my dream of (fill in the blank). Then focus on any negative or contradictory thoughts that pop into your mind about your declaration. A personal journal is a great tool for this exercise. The more specific you can be with your statement, the greater the likelihood you?ll be able to uncover those sneaky unworthy feelings.

One step at a time: Once you begin to identify unworthy thoughts or triggers you can start gently stretching the limits of your comfort zone. Be willing to try different strategies and don?t be discouraged if you have to keep at it for awhile. These feelings of unworthiness have likely been with you for decades, so be kind to yourself, celebrate small victories, and be patiently persistent.

Let go of the past: For some reason, at some point in your life you came to the conclusion that you were lacking. Maybe you were bullied as a kid, or maybe you made a mistake? maybe it was a real whopper of a mistake and now you?re stuck mentally rerunning the experience and what you could or should have done differently. It?s time to let it go. The longer this has been going on the tougher it will be to clear it from your mind, but meaningful change always begins with a decision and in this case it?s up to you to choose not to give those thoughts the energy they require to remain an active part of your life.

Risk change: The thing about unworthiness is over time it becomes a comfortable companion and it is awfully tempting to stay with what?s known rather than risk the discomfort of change, rejection or even failure. Focus on your dreams and find a purpose that is important enough to motivate you to muster the strength and courage to step into the unknown and be free of what?s holding you back.

Be willing to ask for help: Sometimes feelings of unworthiness stem from a major life change or a traumatic event. As valuable as self-directed personal growth exercises can be, it?s important to understand that asking for help is not a weakness. Even the most courageous and successful people from time to time need a helping hand to move forward.

Sometimes the space between where you are and where you want to be can feel like a massive distance, but the truth is even the most self-confident among us will experience doubt from time to time. We may not be able to completely avoid it, but we can become more resilient by developing a strategy that enables us to effectively conquer feelings of self-doubt and unworthiness. Prep Blog: Post Christmas Tournament Madness ? CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? The Christmas holiday has passed, and high school athletes got a few days off to open gifts and enjoy family time.

But the weekend after Christmas is one of the busiest in the state for high school teams as virtually every hockey, basketball and some wrestling squads compete in a holiday tournament. It gives fans a chance to see some of the best teams in the state square off in a competitive atmosphere without an entire season being on the line.

With that said, here are some of the best bets if you want to see some of the best teams and athletes in the state in action the rest of the week.

Boys Hockey: Schwan Cup

The Schwan Cup is easily the biggest boys holiday hockey tournament in Minnesota with 48 teams playing in four brackets around the Twin Cities. The thrill for the players is getting to the championship games in each bracket, which are all played at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul

The Gold Division is loaded with Minnetonka, Hill-Murray, Blaine, Burnsville, Breck, Duluth East, Edina and St. Thomas Academy. Most of those teams end up at Xcel Energy Center in March for the state tournament. Action got started Wednesday, with the highlight of the day being St. Thomas Academy?s 2-1 overtime win over Edina.

The other top hockey tournament in the metro is the Sports Authority Classic at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center. Action starts Thursday afternoon and the field includes Bloomington Jefferson, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Moorhead, Lakeville North, Benilde-St. Margaret?s, Elk River and Maple Grove.

Boys Basketball: Catholic Spirit Tournament

The University of St. Thomas serves as host to one of the better boys high school basketball tournaments this weekend. Action gets started Thursday with an 8-team bracket that includes Wayzata, Hill-Murray, Rosemount, Providence Academy, Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Agnes, Milwaukee Bay View and Holy Angels. You?ll notice mostly private Catholic schools in the field.

The Granite City Classic at St. Cloud Apollo should also be a solid tournament. The field of 10 teams includes Rocori, Becker, St. Michael-Albertville, Blake, Sartell, Delano, Buffalo, St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud Apollo and Apple Valley, which features one of the state?s top players, Tyus Jones.

Girls Basketball: Dick?s Sporting Goods Classic

The top girls basketball tournament in the metro area is the Dick?s Sporting Goods Classic at Hopkins High School. The field includes host Hopkins, St. Paul Central, Eden Prairie, Prior Lake, Minnetonka and Osseo. There?s also a very competitive tournament at Hill-Murray, which includes the host as well as Cretin-Derham Hall, Cooper, Totino-Grace, Wayzata, Mounds View, Centennial and Stillwater.

Wrestling: The Clash National Duals

If you want to see some of the best high school wrestling in the country, head to Rochester Community and Technical College this weekend. It serves as the host for the Clash National Duals, which are Friday and Saturday. There are 12 Minnesota schools in the field, led by national powerhouse Apple Valley.

Other Minnesota teams in the field include Burnsville, Forest Lake, Hastings, Kasson-Mantorville, Kimball, Owatonna, Prior Lake, Rochester Mayo, Simley, St. Michael-Albertville and Zumbrota-Mazeppa.

Also a good reminder: The Target Center will host the Timberwolves Shootout, an all-day basketball tournament, on Saturday, Jan. 5. The event features five Minnesota teams, and the day starts with Lakeview Christian Academy facing Onalaska (Wis.) at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., DeLaSalle faces Blue Valley Northwest High School of Kansas. Roseville will face Valley High School of West Des Moines, Iowa, at 1 p.m. The final and featured match-up of the day puts Minnesota?s two top junior recruits against each other.

Tyus Jones and Rashad Vaughn will lead Apple Valley and Cooper respectively in a game that?s scheduled for 3 p.m. I?ll be at that game to get my first in-person look at each player. Both have received several offers from the best Division I programs in the country. The Gophers have offered scholarships to both.

Former tea party leader blames GOP for setbacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Republican Party and stupid statements by some candidates are to blame for GOP losses in last month's congressional elections, the former leader of a tea party group said Monday.

Dick Armey, who until recently led the conservative group FreedomWorks, said some GOP candidates said "stupid things" that party leaders should have taught them to avoid saying. He said Republicans had a lot of candidates who did "dumb things" during their campaigns.

Armey, a former Republican House majority leader from Texas, did not specifically mention controversial comments about rape by GOP Senate candidates in Indiana and Missouri that contributed to their defeats in November. Republicans had been hoping to win control of the Senate but ended up losing seats instead, and they lost strength in the House as well.

Armey said it is the party's job to support and train candidates.

He left FreedomWorks after an internal dispute about the group's direction.

Armey made his remarks on "This Morning" on CBS.

Polskie LNG Project Reaches Over 1,7 Million ... - LNG World News

1,7 Million Accident Free Man-Hours at Polskie LNG Terminal Construction

A culture of work safety based on the values, attitudes and standards of behavior in the field of occupational safety, common to all workers performing works on the construction of the LNG terminal, was introduced and fostered by the Investor ? Polskie LNG S.A. together with the Investment?s General Contractor (GRI). This approach resulted in over 1 785 920 man-hours without any serious or fatal accident (as of 31 October 2012).

GRI introduced a safety management system whose main objective is to identify any potential risk exposure which ? if not addressed ? could develop into an accident at work or occupational illness. A number of proactive measures have been employed to meet relevant health and safety standards at the construction site.

Since the beginning of works performed by the Saipem ? Techint ? PBG Consortium, more than 3000 people have been trained in health and safety issues, over 1504 persons have received instruction for working at height, and a first-aid training course has been provided to 197 staff members.

The EPC Contractor has introduced compulsory daily pre-shift briefings for each brigade. At these meetings employees receive necessary instruction from the foreman assisted by the head H&S inspector on the type of work they are expected to perform and all safety measures applicable. Additionally, potentially dangerous events that may be related to the scheduled tasks are also discussed.

GRI?s H&S Service also conducts continuous monitoring of jobs. Inspectors, each of whom has a designated area of responsibility, work in close cooperation with subcontractors? health and safety services. They report all anomalies identified as well as positive observations at the end of each shift. In the event of hazardous circumstance they initiate immediate action at the site, including suspension of work. Recognition of positive behaviours and instant intervention in the event of dangerous situation are particularly emphasized.

All works on the construction site are conducted on the basis of a written work permit, which allows to make right decisions in the event where works overlap and thus cannot be performed simultaneously. Furthermore, random breath testing of subcontractors? employees is also conducted. GRI pays particular attention to the operators of cranes, heavy equipment and hook carriers.

The EPC Contractor (GRI) provides the workers with well-functioning health care system in medical care facilities established directly at the LNG terminal construction site. These include four highly skilled paramedics working in an Ambulatorium furnished with equipment comparable to that available in ambulances. The paramedics also have a car equipped with rescue & emergency equipment at their disposal, which allows them to react quickly in any place on the construction site stretching over an area of approximately 40 hectares.

In order to monitor compliance with health and safety procedures, regular audits of all subcontractors are carried out, allowing to maintain uniform standards for the entire construction (for example, transport, storage and use of gas cylinders, storage and use of hazardous substances, ensuring the minimum standards for sanitary and hygienic facilities). Audits in first aid, involving first-aid kits? supplies checks, as well as the number of persons trained in the field of first aid and emergency behaviour, are held on a monthly basis.

Moreover, at least once a month evacuation and emergency first aid drills are held. Often they are run in cooperation with the specialists from local and regional units of National Fire Service. Such drills involve exercising different scenarios, such as rescue and evacuation from height of the tank, from the excavations or from the office space.

Bullying has long-term health consequences

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Childhood bullying can lead to long term health consequences, including general and mental health issues, behavioral problems, eating disorders, smoking, alcohol use, and homelessness, a study by the Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University found.

"What is apparent from these results is that bullying victimization that occurs early in life may have significant and substantial consequences for those victims later in life," said Leana Bouffard, Director of the Crime Victims' Institute. "Thus, the adverse health consequences of victimization are much more far-reaching than just immediate injury or trauma. Understanding these long term consequences is important to assessing the true toll of crime on its victims and on society as well as responding to victims more effectively."

The study, "The Long Term Health Consequences of Bullying Victimization," recommends investing in victim services and effective prevention programs, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a school based initiative for violence prevention. Programs can help address the immediate trauma, both mental and physical, that victims experience.

"This type of investment may also have the added benefit of reducing the long-term deleterious effects identified in this and other studies, thus reducing the high cost of victimization born by the victims themselves, the health care system and society in general," Bouffard said.

The current study is based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a long term study that tracks a sample of U.S. residents born between 1980 and 1984. Nineteen percent of those surveyed said they had been a victim of repeated bullying.

The study found that those bullying victims had more negative perceptions of their general health and mental health and higher rates of emotional/mental or behavioral problems that interfered with school or work. They were also more likely to have an eating disorder, smoke, consume alcohol, experience subsequent violent victimization, or be homeless.

"While these are adverse consequences themselves, they may also serve as intermediate mechanism for even more long-term health issues, such as cancer, alcoholism, depression and other serious problems," said Maria Koeppel, co-author of the study.

Great to see some windows phone app news!! Nice app though

3. snowgator posted on 9 hours ago 0 0

I actually have an app called "Bill Minder", which is free. It is a buggy little thing, and a little harder to use then I feel an app such as this should be. It does give reminders and charts, so it does what I need. But I do not recommend it.

Rankings by users on the Marketplace, just FYI:

My Expenses: 4 stars (259 users)

Toshi Finance: 4 1/2 stars (80 ratings

Expensify: 4 stars (27 ratings)

Finance Helper: free 4 stars (116 ratings), paid 4 stars (6 ratings)

Bill Minder (app I use): 3 stars (2 reviews)

For some reason, can not find "my Moneybook". Daniel, did you get the name wrong?

When you click on the app title, it will take you directly to the app, and, yes, it is all one word "myMoneyBook" :)

Could the Computer Age Have Begun in Victorian England?

A Victorian-era device might have jumpstarted the Computer Age more than 100 years before the first personal computers of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. That century-old dream has inspired a British programmer to launch a crowd-funding effort that can finally make the steam-powered "Analytical Engine" a reality.

The early computer concept ? a brass-and-iron machine the size of a small steam locomotive ? came from the mind of Charles Babbage, a famed mathematician who tinkered with different designs for the Analytical Engine until his death in 1871. The Plan 28 project aims to build Babbage's machine by raising $8 million (5 million in British pounds) over the next 10 years.

"The Analytical Engine would have been the world's first computer," said John Graham-Cumming, a programmer and director of Plan 28.

Victorian-era technology could only do so much. Babbage envisioned a general-purpose computer with just 1 kilobyte of memory ? 500,000 times less than the memory of an iPhone 4 ? that would have worked 13,000 times slower than the ZX81 home computer made in 1981.

But the Analytical Engine still had the same basic blueprint used by modern digital computers. It had a "Store" for holding numbers and results, a "Mill" for crunching numbers, and could even show its results through devices such as an attached printer. Programs were written in punched cards that represent pieces of stiff paper with holes similar to what some modern voting machines use today.

Such a computer might have changed history at a time when the Industrial Revolution, modern science, new inventions and Imperial British expansion were already reshaping the world. [Top 10 Life-Changing Inventions]

"I think a similar outpouring of ideas would have been generated as we saw when the computer age got started in the 20th century," Graham-Cumming told TechNewsDaily. "The big question is, who would have got to use it; perhaps the military, perhaps the government, perhaps the companies driving the British Empire."

The British government showed early interest in funding one of Babbage's simpler calculating devices, called the Difference Engine No. 1, but cut off funding by 1842. When Babbage died in 1871, none of his machines had been fully built.

One of Babbage's close friends and a fellow mathematician, Ada Lovelace, helped expand on the Analytical Engine's idea while translating a short Italian article about the device. Lovelace's translated article included her own sketches of programs for the machine ? earning her the honor of being considered history's first computer programmer.

Modern experts have since built two replicas of Babbage's Difference Engine No. 2 on display in London's Science Museum and the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. The London museum's version helped inspire Graham-Cumming to dare dream of building the Analytical Engine.

"There are literally thousands of pages of hand-written notes left by Babbage and hundreds of large scale plans of the machine," Graham-Cumming explained. "They represent a lifetime of working on the Analytical Engine."

Plan 28 first needs to settle on a single design for the Analytical Engine. A computer simulation could then help test the functionality of the machine before committing to build the huge physical replica.

"Babbage constantly improved his designs and the notes and plans represent a succession of refinements and improvements," Graham-Cumming said. "We think it will take a couple of years to really settle on a plan that Babbage himself would recognize as his machine."

Dutch children could have three or more parents | McBlog

AFP 24 Oct 2012
Dutch kids may soon be able to have three or more mothers or fathers after the government said it was seeking to enshrine parenting rights for the Netherlands? 25,000 children in gay families.

?The justice ministry is going to investigate and see what the possibilities are for recognising three parents or more per family,? ministry spokesman Wiebe Alkema told AFP on Wednesday.

The left-wing Green party, but also the Liberal VVD and the Labour PvdA parties that won last month?s parliamentary election, requested the report with a view to amending a lesbian parenting bill currently before parliament.

The Netherlands was the first country to legalise gay marriage in 2001 and when a gay or lesbian couple has a child, another parent is by biological necessity involved.

But, said Green MP Liesbeth van Tongeren, it is also essential to recognise the rights of non-biological parents, including step-parents.

?Currently parenthood in the eyes of the law is almost always the consequence of biological parenthood,? her party said in a statement, stressing that ?this does not represent the diversity of families in the Netherlands.?

?Often enough, the father of a child with lesbian parents also plays a role in the life of the child,? she said.

Intramural Sports Under New Management, Expects To Have Great ...

Sports

Photographer:?Joseph Geha

Volleyball players in the middle of a rally on Monday.

CSU East Bay students had their sneakers tied tight in anticipation for the opening of intramural sports Monday night, as it opened under new management and with new goals for this year.

The Recreation and Wellness Center will host five sporting leagues in hopes of promoting student activity, friendly competition and skills development for CSUEB students.

Co-ed volleyball and basketball will be offered, as well as competitive leagues for both sports.

Newly appointed sports and activities coordinator, Corey Gazay, said he expects to unfold a memorable year of intramural sports.

?I definitely have high expectations,? said Gazay. ?I want to build excitement on campus and have intramural sports [be] the thing to do on weekdays.?

Gazay, a former graduate assistant for Competitive Sports at the University of Florida hasn?t wasted a moment since being hired.

Gazay has already implemented new ?3 vs. 3? leagues for both basketball and volleyball, with volleyball being the only one available for the fall quarter.

?The new 3 vs. 3 leagues cater to students who do not have anything going on in the afternoon,? Gazay explains. ?It allows students who have a long day of classes to break up hours of studying and play the sport they love.?

Gazay is focused on promoting a simple sign-up-and-register process for students who are eager to participate.

?The only thing a student needs to do is have a membership to the RAW and post a five dollar team fee to play,? Gazay said. ?If the student does not sign up the first week of the quarter, it is never too late for them to contact me to be placed on a team.?

Gazay?s focus on a simple registration process for intramural sports accommodates students like Omarr Mclean, a junior kinesiology major who said he can?t wait to get back on the hardwood and play basketball with his team ?Cash Money.?

?Basketball for intramurals gives us students something to look forward to while on campus,? says McLean.

McLean, a second year participant of intramural basketball, commends the Recreation and Wellness Center for providing leagues available for students.

?Intramural basketball has taught me how to have an appreciation for the sports we have offered to us on campus,? he explained.

From one court to the next, Rachel Alvarez, a kinesiology major, retreats to the volleyball court for some peace and relinquishment from the everyday stresses of classes.

?It helps me stay relaxed and get somewhat of a work out in regardless of the sport,? says Alvarez. ?Mentally, it allows students to get a break from schoolwork.?

Alvarez credits the league for bringing students together for friendly competition, giving them an opportunity that would not be afforded anywhere else.

?I am looking forward to the competitive aspect of volleyball,? says Alvarez. ?But playing with my friends on the same team takes off that competitive edge and makes it more fun.?

The volleyball leagues offered have brought in a crowd very pleased and Associated Students Inc. (ASI) President Jerry Chang is even participating with some of his fellow ASI delegates.

The experiences of Mclean and Alvarez complement Gazay?s vision and commitment to providing a memorable sporting experience for all students. This speaks to the future direction of intramural sports and its goal of keeping students seeking more competitions.

?After students play, I want them to ask me ?Whens the next game??? explains Gazay. ?Once people come to the games and see what it?s about, we have them hooked.?

Web Privacy ? Why Care? | http://blog.hisoftware.com

October 25, 2012 ? Irena Mroz ?

There are 17 reasons why you should care about web privacy and the collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). These are to name a few:

  1. Names
  2. Addresses (all geographic subdivisions including street address, city, county, zip code)
  3. Dates (all elements except years related to an individual (including birth date or date of death for example)
  4. Telephone numbers
  5. Fax numbers
  6. Email addresses
  7. Social Security numbers
  8. Bank account numbers
  9. Debit/credit card numbers
  10. License numbers
  11. Any vehicle or other device serial numbers
  12. Web URLs
  13. Internet Protocol (IP) addresses
  14. Fingers or voice prints
  15. Photographic images
  16. Any other characteristic that could uniquely identify the individual
  17. Hospital records including dates of admission

As a Web user, you expect that the organizations you give this information to will keep it safe. As the owner of a website, you are required by law to keep this information safe for your users.

While many companies recognize the importance of an online privacy risk management strategy, many of those companies get a sense of false security by scanning their websites for privacy issues once a year. Or even worse, only when the site is first developed and implemented. Websites should be tested for compliance during the development process and monitored continuously to ensure regulatory compliance.

While many organizations, both public and private, are mandated by privacy legislation that governs the collection, use, retention and distribution of personal information, this legislation varies greatly from country to country and can often be difficult to monitor and enforce. For example, in the EU, the cookie laws have changed and as a result how organizations interact with their Web users has changed. For organizations in the US, if operating abroad, this may or may not impact their Web business.

A best practice online privacy program, reinforced with a comprehensive automated privacy Web scanning program, provides a model that helps to ensure proper online collection, usage and protection of consumer?s personal data.

Regular, automated privacy scanning helps to mitigate the risks associated with non-compliant online content including:

  • Fines by regulatory agencies
  • Lawsuits by consumers or other end-users
  • Lost customers due to breached personal information
  • Reputational damage

Learn how online privacy compliance can be managed as part of an achievable strategy to ensure you are not putting your end users or your organization at risk.

MLI Senior Fellow Linda Nazareth in The Globe and Mail: Canada lucky to have options if economy slows

October 19, 2012 ? In yesterday?s Globe and Mail, MLI Senior Fellow Linda Nazareth discusses the policy options Canada still has in?its toolbox should the?economy slow. Full column below:

It is time to talk about the next global recession. No, it is not a certainty, and in fact it probably isn?t going to be a global recession anyway. What it?s likely to be is a sort of checkered recession: some countries are going to be hit hard, and some are going to be hit just a little

The last time around, in 2008, we had what seem in hindsight to have been a luxurious selection of policy tools to throw at the problem. Government spending, interest-rate cuts, non-traditional policy initiatives ? all were available, and all were used.

Flash forward four years and the options are severely limited. Government spending? Not if you are on the (ever-longer) list of countries risking a ratings cut. Interest rate cuts? Not if your benchmark rate is already zero (hello U.S., U.K.). On the plus side, most of the developing countries do have a little give in their monetary policy, and in the coming weeks we may find that many are willing to risk inflation in order to put in some stimulus. India, in particular, is on that list. Commodity-dependent Australia has started to cut rates too.

In the U.S., the Federal Reserve is still dealing with the effects of the 2008 crisis, with its one-two-three rounds of quantitative easing. Interest rate cuts are out of the question: the benchmark interest rate is already effectively zero. As for fiscal stimulus ? well, avoiding the fiscal cliff is ambitious enough right now.

And now let?s look at the Bank of Canada. Canada was doing so well pre-global crisis that the Bank actually tightened policy a bit through 2007, which had left the target for the overnight rate at 4 per cent. It started to cut rates in early 2008, then cut them more rapidly as the crisis deepened. By March, 2009, the benchmark rate was 0.5 per cent, although it was raised to 1 per cent in 2010. It has been at that level ever since.

You could certainly argue that the ?real? (inflation adjusted) interest rate in Canada is already basically zero (the inflation rate in Canada was 1.2 per cent as of August) but that does not mean that it cannot go into negative territory. Unlike others, the Bank of Canada still has scope to cut rates, if and when they need to do so. That?s long before getting into any quantitative easing on this side of the border. And let?s remember that Canadian government finances are stable enough that fiscal stimulus is a possibility too ? rather than a pipe dream in so many other parts of the world.

Is that going to be enough to save Canada if things slow down around the world? Of course not: if things get bad enough elsewhere, we are going to be vulnerable to a recession here too, particularly if we get a deep slide in commodity prices. There may be an argument too, that the Bank of Canada is waiting too long and should have stopped worrying about the consumer credit frenzy and just started cutting rates months ago.

There is no agreement on what the world should do about the impending storm. The IMF and World Bank could not come to an easy solution at their recent meetings, and the markets are torn on what the right moves are too.

But if there any comfort for Canada, it is that whatever happens there are a couple of possible buffers to the possible ? a downturn is still a scenario, not a certainty ? turmoil in the rest of the world. The first will likely come through a slide in the Canadian dollar which will cushion trade a bit. The next will come through whatever the fiscal and monetary policy makers decide.

It?s nice to have options.

Non-profit coming to Charlotte to aid women business owners ...

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

At Three Little Birds stationary shop in Charlotte the chirping of the printing press machine is melodically crafting notes.

"The neighborhood where we are located in south end has been really supportive of us and they really helped to keep us in business, " said the stationary shop owner Kristen Stewart.

Five years ago when Stewart started her business these shelves weren't stocked with orders and this machine was not singing at all.

"It's been a rocky road," said Stewart.

"We started right when the economy tanked."

The self starter was new to the business world and says there weren't many resources available to help women.

"Just meeting other women who have been successful in business, learning how they were able to balance work and life, funding sources, and creative ways to market your business," said Stewart.?

Today, there are many more opportunities and support systems to give women a leg up.

For example, Count Me In For Women's Economic Independence, an organization which provides women help with growing their business.

"They got their nose on the grindstone doing their business everyday and they don't necessarily look at their financial and they don't really have a road map for growth," said Neil Merlino, Founder and President of Count Me In for Women's Independence.

And not fall short of their male counterparts.

"We spend a lot of time talking about how to have a bigger vision for your business so that you can in fact?start to attract the kind of people that you need both as customers and investors and as employees or contractors," said Merlino.

With mentoring services geared towards women,?Stewart hopes to keep Three Little Birds nestled in profits.?

Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence will be in Charlotte offering conferences for Women.

ABI Research Suggest One-Fifth Of Customers Ready For Online ...

American technology market research firm ABI Research have claimed in a new study that around 20% of consumers in America are of the belief that online video can?serve as?a replacement for their pay-TV networks.

The authors of the report (compiled under the ?Technology Barometer Research Service?)?suggest that the news could be seen as a ?significant risk? to the stature of traditional TV business operations, an industry?reported to have a value of $16.8b in the USA.

ABI?have recognised that on current market trends, the number of??pay-TV households??(covering ?traditional cable, satellite and telco TV? services) will be on the?decline?at an average annual?rate of 0.5% through to 2017.

In the wake of these developments, ABI naturally believe that many of these lost?subscription TV customers will turn to??over-the-top??(OTT) platforms and?online subscription packages (in particular movie streaming sites such as Netflix). It is believed that currently, the opportunity for consumers to get the best of both markets is currently strong, with an estimated 30% of online consumers with?subscription TV having in-place?a ?foundation? for OTT platforms.

A claim from the company for a potential response by subscription platforms?to the suggested future of the market include releasing ?lightweight? services at a lower cost for less content, as ABI?s TV & video ?practice director? Sam Rosen explained: ?While many OTT services focus on movies, the goal of lightweight pay TV packages should be to introduce customers to the brand and tease customers with premium content offerings.?

Bears Brandon Marshall blasts Lions Ndamukong Suh on Twitter

The Lions game wasn?t over when it was over Monday night. After the Lions 13-7 loss to the Bears, there was some action on Twitter.

His first tweet:

?A Suh. What u did to Jay wasn't cool. Great players don't have to do that.?

That was followed an hour later by this:

?A Suh. Something I've learned and now passing down to you. Succeed with character?

Suh was not whistled for a roughing the passer penalty for the sack. Cutler?s right shoulder was ground into the turf. He went down in pain, the trainers came out and he went off the field.

?He took just one play off and was back. It was reported that he had bruised ribs.

?It?s possible the NFL could disagree with the on-field officials and slap Suh with a fine.
